WHY THERE'S NO MERCURY DRUG IN SM MALLS?

WHY THERE'S NO MERCURY DRUG IN SM MALLS?

Henry Sy, Sr. (born December 25, 1924) is a Chinese Filipino businessman with interests in retailing, real estate, hospitality, banking, mining, education including healthcare services. He pioneered the establishment of SM Malls, anchored by Shoemart Department Store and Supermarket earning him the title; the Philippines' Retail King. He is the chairman of
SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the holding corporation for all his business interests in his vast business empire. In 2011, Forbes Magazine listed him as the no. 1 billionaire in the Philippines.

Have you ever wondered why there is no Mercury Drug in SM Malls here in Philippines? well… here’s the story...

Mr. Sy was a very ambitious man. He wanted to get rich more than 2 decades ago. He tried many businesses to get enough income but failed. After trying so hard to make both ends meet; he finally have earned enough money to start a small business.

Something crossed to his mind. He will build a small shoe store. He thought how could he get some customers.

An idea popped out.

He noticed that Mercury Drug, which is big drug store and been to the business for many years, has many loyal customers coming to them. He approached the owner and asked if he can rent and place his small shoe store there even with a very small portion. He was not allowed and got embarrassed even though he asked politely.

Mr. Sy then promised to himself that Mercury Drug will never step in his life when he gets rich. So in 1958, Mr. Sy established his shoe store in Quiapo, Manila, which became SM Quiapo, the first SM Mall, in November 1972.

Now, Mr. Sy is the richest man in the Philippines because of his own will and determination, gaining $5 billion in 2010, amid the global financial crisis. He is also the owner of Chinabank and operator of BDO. Aside from his numerous malls, supermalls and supermarkets in the Philippines, he also owns 6 SM Malls in Mainland China, and 1 SM Mall in Guam.

Now he never lets a single Mercury Drug do business in any of his SM malls. Instead he franchised Watson's from Hong Kong which became the substitute for Mercury Drug

Carabuena Faces Driving Ban – LTO

MANILA, Philippines - The motorist who assaulted a traffic constable of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) may likely be barred from driving any motor vehicle.
This, after Robert Blair Carabuena failed to show up at the summary hearing of his case at the Land Transportation Office-National Capital Region (LTO NCR) yesterday.
LTO-NCR Director Teofilo Guadiz III said Carabuena's no-show is equivalent to "waiving his right to present evidence on his defense," particularly on the MMDA's request to have his driver's license revoked for assaulting Saturnino Fabros last month.
"Mr. Carabuena didn't have the courtesy to show up and request for an extension if he wanted more time to prepare his defense. There was neither any call nor manifestation so we will only decide based on the affidavit-complaint of Mr. Fabros," Guadiz said.
The transportation official said their decision on Carabuena's case is geared toward revocation of the driver's license, as requested by MMDA, which would mean "lifetime disbarment from driving any motor vehicle."
But Guadiz admitted that Carabuena could still appeal the LTO-NCR's decision to revoke his license to drive before the Secretary of Transportation and Communications.

HIDDEN DANGER IN YOUR MILK

HIDDEN DANGER
IN YOUR MILK?
Two Reporters Fired by
Fox News for Revealing
Health Dangers in Milk (10 min)
----------------------------------------------
I posted this clip a while back but I feel that it is a very important fact that needs to be frequently shared so that people can know the truth. This is for anyone who drinks milk or consumes other dairy products and depends on the news media to report suspected health concerns accurately and honestly.

Here you will find behind-the-scenes details about how a large share of America’s milk supply has quietly become adulterated with the effects of a synthetic hormone (bovine growth hormone, or BGH) secretly injected into cows and how pressure from the hormone maker Monsanto led Fox TV to fire two of its award-winning reporters and sweep under the rug much of what they discovered but were never allowed to broadcast.

After a five-week trial and six hours of deliberation which ended August 18, 2000, a Florida state court jury unanimously determined that Fox "acted intentionally and deliberately to falsify or distort the plaintiffs' news reporting on BGH." In that decision, the jury also found that Jane's threat to blow the whistle on Fox's misconduct to the FCC was the sole reason for the termination... and the jury awarded $425,000 in damages which makes her eligible to apply for reimbursement for all court costs, expenses and legal fees.

THE COCKTAIL OF
UP TO 20 CHEMICALS
IN A GLASS OF MILK
----------------------------------
A glass of milk can contain a cocktail of up to 20 painkillers, antibiotics and growth hormones, scientists have shown.Using a highly sensitive test, they found a host of chemicals used to treat illnesses in animals and people in samples of cow, goat and human breast milk. The doses of drugs were far too small to have an effect on anyone drinking them, but the results highlight how man-made chemicals are now found throughout the food chain.

The highest quantities of medicines were found in cow’s milk. Researchers believe some of the drugs and growth promoters were given to the cattle, or got into milk through cattle feed or contamination on the farm. The Spanish-Moroccan team analysed 20 samples of cow’s milk bought in Spain and Morocco, along with samples of goat and breast milk.

Their breakdown, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, revealed that cow’s milk contained traces of anti-inflammatory drugs niflumic acid, mefenamic acid and ketoprofen – commonly used as painkillers in animals and people. It also contained the hormone 17-beta-estradiol, a form of the sex hormone oestrogen. The hormone was detected at three millionths of a gram in every kilogram of milk, while the highest dose of niflumic acid was less than one millionth of a gram per kilogram of milk.

However, the scientists, led by Dr Evaristo Ballesteros, from the University of Jaen in Spain, say their technique could be used to check the safety of other types of food. Dr Ballesteros said: ‘We believe the new methodology will help to provide a more effective way of determining the presence of these kinds of contaminants in milk or other products. ‘Food quality control laboratories could use this new tool to detect these drugs before they enter the food chain. This would raise consumers’ awareness and give them the knowledge that food is… harmless, pure, genuine, beneficial to health and free of toxic residues,’ he added.

The tests also found niflumic acid in goat’s milk, while breast milk contained traces of painkillers ibuprofen and naproxen, along with the antibiotic triclosan and some hormones. The researchers say their new 30-minute test is the most sensitive of its kind. If the findings are true for Spanish and Moroccan milk, they could equally be true for milk produced in Britain and northern Europe.
Last year Portsmouth University scientists found that fish were being contaminated with the anti-depressant Prozac. The drug enters rivers from the sewer system and tinkers with the brain chemistry of fish, the researchers claimed.Previous studies have shown that caffeine is released into our waterways after surviving the sewage treatment process. The hormones from the contraceptive pill and HRT have been blamed for feminising fish, leading to male fish producing eggs.

The effects of antibiotics, blood pressure drugs and cholesterol-lowering drugs on wildlife are also being studied around the world.
